Knowing how to charge your car's battery can get you out of several different sticky situations and even save you money at the shop. However, learning how to perform a charge safely is a crucial first step.

The first step to charging your vehicle's battery is to ensure the charger is switched off before you begin. Once you've double-checked that everything is turned off, connect the positive line from the charger to the larger of the two battery terminals, this will be the positive connection. Next, take the charger's negative cable and connect it to the remaining battery rod or the negative terminal.

When everything is connected to the vehicle, you can safely turn on the charger and set it to the lowest charge rate available. It can take anywhere from six to 12-hours to charge a battery completely, but this depends almost entirely on the amperage of your battery and its charger.
