What Do Motor Oil Viscosity Ratings Mean?

The correct engine specifications for your car as well as temperature determine the correct oil viscosity. Viscosity just means the thickness of the fluid. If the oil is too thin, it won’t lubricate the moving parts as well as it should. When it’s too thick, it can overwork the engine.

The numbers located on a bottle of multi-grade motor oil tell you what the viscosity levels are. A 10W40 oil, for example, tells you that 10 is the maximum viscosity of the oil when the engine is cold or in cold weather. During cold weather, lower viscosity is better for engine performance. Thick, high viscosity oil, moves too slowly. The W stands for winter. The second number, 40 in this instance, means that the oil should fall within this viscosity range during hot weather or when the engine is fully warmed up.
